Almost Broken

Last week I had a baseball game on Sunday afternoon. The morning was taken up with a trip down to Colorado Springs with my son for his birthday. I got back with just an hour before I had to leave for baseball and a puppy to spend some time with and also change. I spent a little time with the dog and then decided to run on the treadmill quickly.

I am glad I did. I had been fighting an eye infection (unknown to me), and it got bad out in the wind of the game. By the time I drove home, I couldn't see out of one eye well, had to pull that contact, and I was stressing. My forehead was tight, shoulders tensed, and just miserable. I came home, took a shower to try and relax and then tried to sleep, feeling horrible.

If I hadn't run that afternoon, the streak would have been broken. I wouldn't have pushed it that night, and as it was, I wasn't sure I'd run the next day. Drops from the doctor and all day in bed had me jogging for a short run that night.

I'm glad the streak continues, but I made my peace with it that night for sure. If it had broken, I'd have been OK with it.

True Excel Treadmill

In Orlando I was at a very nice resort, actually a Marriot complex that had a Marriot and Ritz sharing the same grounds and fitness center. It reminded me of some of the high end centers in Vegas or the Caribbean with lots of amenities.

The treadmills they they had there were True ES 900 treadmills, and they were nice. Large screens, a big, heavy machine that dwarfed me and my treadmill at home. I could probably fit my treadmill (Reebok ES900) on the True treadmill easily.

Being at sea level, I expected the treadmill to feel easy, but it spun up quickly to speed and seemed to be going faster than mine at home. I've compared mine a few times with the speed I run at outside on the Nike + and it seems fairly accurate, so I chalk it up to me being tired at 6:10 on the East Coast and struggling to run.

However I liked this treadmill. Having run all over the place on various treadmills of all styles, vendors, and quality, I have to say that these True treadmills were some of the nicest I've been on. If they weren't $5k+ for the model, I'd consider getting one at home.

First Quarter 2011

I saw a fellow runner post a note recently that they were on pace to meet their 500 mi goal in 2011 with 125 or so mi in the first quarter. I wasn't sure where I stood, so I decided to look.

Jan: 65.04
Feb: 51.66
Mar: 59.24

That's 175 miles, on pace for 700 miles this year.

Considering that I ended up with 592mi all of last year, and 603 in my first year of running, that's quite a change.

I don't know if I will get there, and not sure that I want to run that much, but the 50-60mi/month seems like a good pace for me now.

Struggling to run after an early morning with Scouts. Tried to get Delaney to do a mile during his personal fitness test, but he bailed at the 9 minute mark, which was what he had to do. He was tired, and so I stopped. Got home, and knew I needed to run because otherwise I might fall asleep. As it was, I struggled on the treadmill.

Day 939

I told my son that I'd run with him after school. He's been a bit lazy recently and I wanted to make sure he stays in some kind of shape. However this morning  I felt like running. I just wanted to get out there, after two cups of coffee, thinking about a third, I just wanted to go.

I walked outside, but it was cold, and a little windy. I wanted to enjoy this run, not be distracted by the wind, so I hit the treadmill. A great run, 20 minutes later.

Day 938

A nice day outside, a little windy, but not crazy windy. However since I've been cooped up inside for nearly a week on runs, I decided to get out.

I walked a bit, heading in the wrong direction until the road dipped and then turned and ran back. The legs were a little tired, and the sideways motion on the gravel had my right ankle slightly complaining. Not sharp pains, but some soreness. I ran down to where the road starts to dip to the South, then back again, walking the last minute or so.

A Dissapointing Series of Trips

I was traveling last week, to Orlando and Dallas, and was hoping to get some good runs in. None of the people that I knew in places were runners, but I was thinking I might get a chance to find some good places to run.

In Orlando, at the JW Marriot, which is a resort compound, I was struggling to get up early and run, and it was dark when I was out there, so I elected not to explore. In the afternoons I looked around, but with no car I didn't want to leave the property, and the property was full of cement, which didn't appeal to me.

In Dallas I was rushed, really only one day there and the same thing. I was in the middle of the north part of the city, pressed for time, and nothing but sidewalk around me so I elected for the treadmill. A dark, morning run in a suburb wasn't my idea of a scenic route.

Oh well, I'll build in a few hours on the next trip to get out and find a park to run in.

Day 934

Slightly rushed to get out of town today, so I hit the treadmill instead of going outside. The extra 20-30 minutes of time to run, cool down, etc. would make an impact in my day.

Good run, pushed a little, going 6.4mph and then pushing to 6.6 for most of the run. Nothing hurts, but the beginnings of a stitch in my side near the end.
