The End of a Streak

I stopped running last Friday.

After 1564 days, I reached a point where it didn’t work in my life. I was on vacation with the family, we’d skied all day, it was late, kids were hungry, and I needed to cook some dinner. I was thinking to take 20 minutes out of the late afternoon and run, but the hotel where we had booked a week didn’t have a exercise room. It was icy outside, which felt too dangerous to me for a run there.

I  could have driven over to a local health club, but interrupting every afternoon, especially when I’d worked hard on the mountain, just didn’t seem worth it. Delaying dinner was even a worse idea, to me. So I made the decision to stop, and move on with life. I knew this streak would end in 2013 with a week long scout trip on a sailboat, so I was prepared.

Putting aside my streak, I went to the store, bought groceries, cooked dinner and called it an easy night with the family.

And I was OK with it. It felt a little weird not to run, but I was tired from skiing and my body didn’t miss the exertion. The rest of the week I skiied hard, not worrying about saving anything for a run and enjoyed the time off. As of today, it’s been 6 days since I’ve run, though I’ll run today.

I was 234 on the active streak list that day, and ending at 1564 puts me at #114 on the retired list. I sent in my note today that I was done.

I may start another one, but not right now. I do want to aim for exercise every day, but I’d like to try a few new things. My wife has wanted to try hot yoga, and I’d like to give that a go. I am aiming for some swimming, more weight lifting, and perhaps even back into martial arts along with the skiing, baseball, volleyball, and of course, running.

Renumbering

Only 54mi last month, but still a good month. A few weight workouts in there along with some long baseball games.

I feel pretty good. Nothing major hurts, though it does feel as though the back is tight. Some struggles swinging at baseball and some of the games where I've been more active at Shortstop are hard on the body. Definitely some soreness, but worlds better than last year at this time.

A little over a week to four years of running. Amazing.

Day 1454

BFL run day, but with no wind, I was halfway down the driveway before I realized. Not wanting to waste the day, I decided to just run  hard. Out to the west, down hills making good time and suffering on the way back. Two stretches of 30s walking to make up for the long hill climbs still had me finishing in decent time.

Slowing Down

After last summer, I was seriously thinking about ending my streak. I was beat up and sore, and struggled to run some days. Not mentally, just physically. I worried about the level of activity.

I hit three years, and things got easier. I was on the road a bit and managed to run, weather was good, and I took it easy after I hit the end of the year. I did 754miles last year, and decided averaging 2mi/day was a bit much with my other activities.

This year I stopped karate, slowed down a bit, and am running in the upper 50s each month for mileage. The big months came in Mar and July, when I was traveling more and running in unfamiliar routes, going a bit longer.

I'm feeling OK, though baseball has been harder this year. Looking forward to a month of just running and lifting in Sept/Oct before skiing starts.

A Sore Knee

I pounded outside for a longer, faster run than normal recently and I knew I was hitting the ground hard. My right knee too most of the pounding for some reason.

The next morning I hit the treadmill and it was sore, but not too bad. However a day later, and an activity filled day of running, and other exercise, and it was swollen slightly, sore to the touch, and I used ice. I ran slower for a few days, and it felt better.

I've been able to run through a lot of injuries across the last 3 plus years, injuries that would have sidelined me for weeks in the past. In that time I've learned a few things, at least I think I have. I'll never know if I'd done damage here or not, but here's what I think.

The body can recover quicker than you think, at least from minor soreness-type injuries. They're injuries, but not debilitating.

Rest doesn't necessarily speed up the process much, and I think it makes it harder for you to get back into the routine of exercise, especially for us non-pro-atheletes.

Active rehabilitation is better, doing some motion and work with the body. Slowing down, and reducing the duration has worked well for me.

Shaky

I hit the treadmill at the hotel the other day since I was really in a hurry in the morning. It was a modern LifeFitness model, the ones that often have the TV attached (this one didn't), and I was surprised by how shaky the treadmill was. If I ran in the middle, it shook audibly, and visibly, making it hard to hear the TV and unnerving me a bit.

I started running at 2.0 incline, but backed that down. I even went to 0 and it was better, but still shaky. I noticed that the left side was much worse, and if I slid to the right a bit, essentially running right of center with both legs, it shook much less.

I did that, and worried because occasionally my shoes would squeak on the side of the treadmill as they hit the deck. Eventually I was close to center, just enduring the shaking. It was an annoying and hard run, making me wish I'd gotten up 30 minutes earlier and gone outside.

Just running

It's been two months of basically just running. Not quite as I've lifted a bit with my son, but easy workouts. Baseball a few times, but about every other week with holidays and travel. Some swimming with the kids, but not really working.

Overall my legs are better, but not great. Still tired, and aching sometimes, but aching less than with karate.

Slowly monitoring and thinking about it, but I may end this soon. My wife wants to do p90x or body for life, and I'd like to swim more. I may have to go down to 1.2mi runs some days if I keep going, or just stop this streak and keep it going as just an "exercise every day" streak.

12,000 Feet

Last week I was in the mountains camping, and after a 4-5 mi hike up a peak, I decided to run. We were near Grays Peak and there was a bumpy, gravel road from the trailhead that I started following down the mountain. .75mi or so later, I turned, knowing it would be hard to get back.

It was crazy hard.

I had .25mi to go, ran .3, or really slowly jogged, and barely made it. My chest was on fire and I struggled quite a bit to make it that .3 mi. The rest of the way I alternated some walking with some jogging, but it was hard. Definitely a difference running at 12,000 feet.

I had planned to be at Camp Alexander, running every morning in the mountains. That was cancelled when the camp was evacuated for a fire near 11 Mile Canyon. Add to that a rolled ankle on Sun morning (glad I ran early) and it's been some slower work on the treadmill.

However I head up to Gray's Peak shortly and I'll be up there until Thur afternoon, so a Wed run at 10,000 feet. I expect to be slow and careful, especially after a hike, but it should be interesting.

Outside for a week

I drove to Boy Scout camp last night, for a week of outdoor life with my son. No cell service, very little power, and really a week of time outside as he works on his scout journey to Eagle scout.

Meanwhile, with limited duties, it's a time to unwind for me, and a time to run outside in the mountains. I'll run based on time, and then map the routes when I get back, since I'm not sure where I'm starting from. It's high, higher than I normally run, and I expect more hilly, but we'll see.

Aching Feet

I have been wearing my Vibram Five Fingers on and off for a month. I haven't been consistent, and haven't really worn them exclusively most days. I've had regular shoes on quite a few times, especially when at my standing desk.

Not a great plan for getting the feet stronger, and I could feel it. Thursday last week I was in the airport and on planes for a good part of the day wearing them. My feet were slightly tired, and on Friday I was tempted to wear my running shoes, but didn't. Instead I was out all day in them, walking through the National Air Museum, on hard floors designed to support the weight of large airplanes.

I tried to step lightly, but caught myself pounding the floor a few times and realized that I should have worked up to this, with some longer days wearing the shoes. I need to back off a bit, and start wearing them around the house when I get home.

Exercise in the Margins

This article about exercising when you can is really interesting. It contains a number of hints about exercising and fitting it in, but fitting it into your life, as you live it.

I love the ideas about the fact that you will lose time, you will have setbacks. That’s one of the reasons I started the mile a day streak. A mile, even jogging slowly, takes no more than about 15 minutes. Maybe 20 if you’re older. I can always find 15 minutes in my day. I’ve done as low as 12.

I know that’s not easy for everyone, but I’d think most people could find 15 minutes to walk every day, whether it’s 5am or 11pm. Time is not a great excuse for a low bar.

However I do know not everyone likes traditional exercise. Walking stairs, walking out of your way on a flat surface, parking further from the door at the grocers, there are any number of small habits you can build.

Picking a sport is a great idea. It’s a commitment, but get a few friends, and try something. Even if you don’t play much, as I didn’t this year with adult volleyball, it’s a habit of movement that you are building.

And have a short memory for sure. If you miss a few days for some reason, forget about it. Pick up some small exercise tomorrow and don’t try to “make up” for what you missed.

Walking or Running

I've been on this running streak for over three years, and I've run every day. As part of my routine, I usually walk a bit before I run and walk a bit after. However lately I've been walking more as my wife trains for the Avon 40 mi walk in June.

It's interesting to look at walking and running. There isn't a lot of calorie difference between a purposeful walk and a slow jog. There isn't a lot of difference in the motion of the legs and I certainly get chafed when walking if I don't have good clothing. There is a lot of impact difference, and it makes me think I ought to walk some days instead of running.

My wife has been training for months, and she's gotten much stronger. She's only jogged a couple of times, but she's felt strong and it's been easy when she ran.

I keep thinking of this streak ending, and I know it will sometime. Stopping karate, and picking up some weights will give me a chance over the next few months to see how the body does and then make some decisions on how to move forward.

Water Views

I was in San Diego a few weeks ago and I had the chance to run along the water. It was a little cool, but not too bad with a light breeze coming off the water. Just how I remember it when I lived there 20 years ago.

It was a nice change of pace, especially as I've done a lot of treadmill running lately. This was a good chance for me to get out there and just run, doing 30 minutes, without worrying about anything. It was a break from life, and one that I appreciated.

Sand would have been better, but given the place I was staying downtown, this was nice. Watching the harbor, and seeing boats in the marina as I cruised along. I'm already looking forward to the chance to run on the East and West coast later this year.

More Exercise

I wouldn't think I need more, but I do think after reading this report that I'm resting a little on my 20min or so of running a day, sometimes not even that.

Last year I wanted to do 2 mi / day and that was a good 20+ min per day, but that only gets me 140 min, just over 2 hours a week. I should double that, even though I do some other stuff, I think I need to make an effort to get in some other exercise, lifting, walking, something to get myself up around 4-5 hours a week, every week.

Blisters

I went on a couple long walks with my wife, running in the middle of some of the walks, and on one I ended up with a blister on the bottom of my foot. It was a long, thin one that was more annoying then painful. I kept running with it across days, and it ended up coming off after about a week, just a patch of dead, dry skin.

It was still annoying after that, a reminder, and I tried to be more careful with my feet.

However I wasn't. A few weeks later I took the wrong shoes on a long trip. Not running shoes, just casual shoes that were loose and ended up rubbing a spot on the outside of my foot, next to my little toe. It got a little raw, and a blister there as well. That one was more painful, and more annoying while both walking and running.

In both of these cases, I didn't do much. Things weren't painful enough, or annoying enough for me to pad them, and I just ran with the irritation.

Not sure that was the best approach, but I also didn't quit, which is something I'd have probably done before this streak. Pushing yourself a little is good, and I've ended up being glad I did so over the last three years.

April 2012

Not a strong month for me, and the body was definitely feeling beat up.  I did run every day, and had some nice runs in the UK and Arizona along the month, but overall I tried to take it a bit easy.

56 miles for the month, lower than 2mi/day, but not bad for me. Overall, I think I broke down a bit this month, and I need to do some recovery over the next few months, going slower, and trying not to make things worse.

I let myself get pushed for time too often, and ended up pressing when I should be out enjoying the run.

Outside in Vegas

Back in Vegas for work, which can be a challenge for running. There are health clubs, but they're a bit pricey in some of the hotels. There are great places outside of the city, and some beautiful parks and preserves in the mountains, but they require a car. What's left?

Cement.

At the Mandalay, I used to run a large block around to the West, over the highway, back East, and then back. Almost two miles, but pounding on cement, and dodging cars on a few streets.

This time, at the MGM, we had more cement (and less asphalt), but no cars to dodge. Going out of the lobby, a friend an I turned away from the strip each morning at 6:30, and then ran to the block, turning left at each city road, ending up back on the strip. It's all sidewalk cement, but not a bad run, and before 7am, few people are out, so you have the chance to jog without too many distractions of obstacles.

Nice to be outside in the cool air, with a friend, cruising along. I'm hoping to get a few more this weekend when I'm at Copper Mountain back in Colorado.

Cooped Up

Lots of snow, cold weather, and muddy roads have had me inside for most of the last month. I could go to town and run, but it's been busy and the treadmill makes life easy.

Today I was going to run before baseball, but got delayed this morning and didn't leave early enough to run. So it was inside again, with really muddy roads around here.

A Short Month

Feb is a short month, but I didn't run a lot this month. I was much less than 2 mi/day, and without some walks with my wife, I'd probably be about 1.5mi a day. The body is tired, I was sick the last week, and just struggling to get motivated to work too hard. I guess 4 days of skiing and a black belt test didn't help.

121mi for the year, so not too bad so far. Jan was a good month, but I'm not sure what Mar will bring, especially with a cold, wet, winter.

Day 1245

An early lunch had me a bit full, but I needed a break from work, so I hit the treadmill. It was a struggle to go today, and from the first few minutes, I knew I'd need to slow. So I did a little over a mile at 1% grade and 6.2mph, just jogging easier. Around 16:00 I felt better, so I got up to 6.5 and a 2% grade to finish out.
