May was a long month, 61.3 miles, along with 9 other workouts during the month.

That brings the yearly total to 291.7 miles in 5 months, or 58.3mi/month. My projections put me at 700 miles. Wonder if I’ll get there.

A week away from a milestone

This is a major one, crossing from 3 digits to 4.

I once wondered if I could run every day for a month. Then it was a year, then two, and after that I finally started to think at 1000 days was a possibility. Just over a week away and I'll be there.

After that I can't decide if I should go for 3 years or just switch to exercising every day. I'm not sure and I have some soreness in the legs that I want to try and heal. Of course, I can't slow down too much with a black belt test in July, but after that I'll have to decide if I go down to just some type of activity every day or keep running and trying to try other things.

The Old Man Shuffle

I was inspired to start this journey by Jim Garrett, former NFL coach, father of Jason Garrett (Cowboys coach) and a guy I saw running around a track at what looked like a shuffle at 78. I hoped that I'd still be able to do that when I got to his age.

Recently I had the chance to experience some of that, after an effort during the day, I went out at night to run and was just tired. Not exhausted, and over 2 miles I wasn't breathing hard, but I struggled to lift my feet with tired legs. It was really what felt like a shuffle, though since I'd get my body in the air for a split second, it couldn't be a walk.

It was still a good workout, with a light sweat, even without long strides. It makes me think that I can probably run until I'm 78.

Catching Up

I realized at the beginning of this month that was slacked off for a few weeks. Sore ankles and knees, but I was still cutting runs shorter than I needed to. I was at a 45-48mi pace early on for this month and while I don't need to hit 60, I want to hit 50.

So the last week I've made an effort to push over 2 miles most days. That's been good for me, making me work more and I'm feeling good. The legs actually feel better. Not sure if this is more taping at karate, the taking it easy the last two weeks or what, but I'll monitor it for a few weeks. I'll also back off slightly, working on keeping right around 1.75 each day, and going over 2 a few times a week. I'm also going to try a few 3-4 mi runs each month, trying to get a little distance and maybe even add in a 5k.

What's Next

Lately I've been feeling beat up, and with a black belt test coming in July, I'm a little worried about my body. It feels fine when I run, but other times it's beat up, especially my knee. It makes me think that I might need to change my routine a bit.

I still enjoy running, and I hate to give up the streak, but I am thinking that if I get to three years, I might stop and look to move to "exercise every day" instead of run every day. Or maybe "sweat every day". That way I can get some rest for some parts of my body and give it a chance to heal.

It also might give me a way to keep working if I decide to get some work done. I'm not sure I need work on my knee, but it is sore, hurts to kneel on, and doesn't support me if it gets bent. Likely I'll get it checked sometime this summer and see what the doctor says.

But first, 1000 days.

April Totals

When I looked at my April mileage total I was surprised:


The highest month I ever had was in the 65mi range, so I knew something was up. As I looked over, I found that my snowboarding tracking was counted as mileage. That makes some sense, as it's human powered mileage, but it's not running for me.

My real mileage total is 54.48. Down a little, but not bad. That gives me 230.42 for the year and a pace of almost 700 miles for the year.
