A nice hard run. Was going outside, but got jammed up by cooking. Pushed a bit, but the left calf (bruised) is sore.

Day 1359

A nice steady run, much like yesterday. Felt great. Tried something different. Ran at 6.5mph (still too windy outside) and did 0:20 each minute at 6.7. Barely felt the push.

Day 1358

I banged my calf last night and it was sore today. Add in almost a full day at a standing desk and I didn't want to push too hard. A nice, steady run,with a couple small interval pushes to 6.7 from 6.5


Walking or Running

I've been on this running streak for over three years, and I've run every day. As part of my routine, I usually walk a bit before I run and walk a bit after. However lately I've been walking more as my wife trains for the Avon 40 mi walk in June.

It's interesting to look at walking and running. There isn't a lot of calorie difference between a purposeful walk and a slow jog. There isn't a lot of difference in the motion of the legs and I certainly get chafed when walking if I don't have good clothing. There is a lot of impact difference, and it makes me think I ought to walk some days instead of running.

My wife has been training for months, and she's gotten much stronger. She's only jogged a couple of times, but she's felt strong and it's been easy when she ran.

I keep thinking of this streak ending, and I know it will sometime. Stopping karate, and picking up some weights will give me a chance over the next few months to see how the body does and then make some decisions on how to move forward.

A mini-milestone

Yesterday was a mini-milestone, and I missed it. I'd been thinking about it, but somehow got lost with a busy Sunday in our lives.

A year ago was day 1000, when I ran with the family. Yesterday was a year after 1000 days, a milestone I never thought I'd reach at this time last year.

A good, steady run today. With a shorter one yesterday, I went longer today and it felt great.

A mini-milestone. Went to town tonight and cruised along the trail by the river.


Water Views

I was in San Diego a few weeks ago and I had the chance to run along the water. It was a little cool, but not too bad with a light breeze coming off the water. Just how I remember it when I lived there 20 years ago.

It was a nice change of pace, especially as I've done a lot of treadmill running lately. This was a good chance for me to get out there and just run, doing 30 minutes, without worrying about anything. It was a break from life, and one that I appreciated.

Sand would have been better, but given the place I was staying downtown, this was nice. Watching the harbor, and seeing boats in the marina as I cruised along. I'm already looking forward to the chance to run on the East and West coast later this year.

More Exercise

I wouldn't think I need more, but I do think after reading this report that I'm resting a little on my 20min or so of running a day, sometimes not even that.

Last year I wanted to do 2 mi / day and that was a good 20+ min per day, but that only gets me 140 min, just over 2 hours a week. I should double that, even though I do some other stuff, I think I need to make an effort to get in some other exercise, lifting, walking, something to get myself up around 4-5 hours a week, every week.

I went on a couple long walks with my wife, running in the middle of some of the walks, and on one I ended up with a blister on the bottom of my foot. It was a long, thin one that was more annoying then painful. I kept running with it across days, and it ended up coming off after about a week, just a patch of dead, dry skin.

It was still annoying after that, a reminder, and I tried to be more careful with my feet.

However I wasn't. A few weeks later I took the wrong shoes on a long trip. Not running shoes, just casual shoes that were loose and ended up rubbing a spot on the outside of my foot, next to my little toe. It got a little raw, and a blister there as well. That one was more painful, and more annoying while both walking and running.

In both of these cases, I didn't do much. Things weren't painful enough, or annoying enough for me to pad them, and I just ran with the irritation.

Not sure that was the best approach, but I also didn't quit, which is something I'd have probably done before this streak. Pushing yourself a little is good, and I've ended up being glad I did so over the last three years.

April 2012

Not a strong month for me, and the body was definitely feeling beat up.  I did run every day, and had some nice runs in the UK and Arizona along the month, but overall I tried to take it a bit easy.

56 miles for the month, lower than 2mi/day, but not bad for me. Overall, I think I broke down a bit this month, and I need to do some recovery over the next few months, going slower, and trying not to make things worse.

I let myself get pushed for time too often, and ended up pressing when I should be out enjoying the run.

Day 1332

A steady run. not too fast, thought a few intervals at 6.7, but most of the run was a steady 6.4, just cruising along. Trying to let the body heal a bit.

Day 1330

Tired, both legs sore last night. Had to lower to 0 incline, go slow, and go shorter than I wanted. Lungs were never stressed, but both legs were tired. Wore the cho-pat strap.
